Molenaar Edition BV increased efficiency and reduced costs at major music publisher thanks to Eddoc Weaver

Molenaar Edition BV is a music publisher and distributor of sheet music and CDs. This family business was founded 75 years ago and focuses primarily on the sale of music for woodwind instruments to orchestras across the world.

Sander Molenaar, managing director and grandson of the founder, explains how Eddoc Weaver has improved his company’s efficiency and reduced costs:

Minimum stock – maximum flexibility

We have been producing sheet music in-house for decades. We use to use our own printing department, which employed eight men. Ten years ago, however, our company switched to Printing on Demand and we started to print very low quantities and hold little or no stock. The final product we have to supply involves a book for the conductor, preferably with full colour cover, as well as all the separate parts for the individual musicians. It usually means that each product consists of approximately fifty different documents.

Fully automated to reduce handling

Over the years we have built up a large catalogue of sheet music with almost 9,000 titles with a total of around half a million different parts. Our aim is to meet with the demands of the orchestras efficiently, with minimum handling. To achieve this we have been building up a database with all the details needed for printing such as: how many of each PDF are needed; which paper is used and what size; what finish; the index; and which printer should be used.

Lower costs and improved productivity

Until recently we were also dependent on the printer supplier, which limited our flexibility. The introduction of Eddoc Weaver represented the start of a new phase for our organization. We can operate just as we were used to, only now without being dependent on external printers. In addition our printing possibilities have increased considerably: we can print variable texts, which originate from the database and our website; place and print different and newer advertisements in the books as well as on the individual music parts with the possibility to connect orders received via our website directly to our printer. This enables us to maintain the same level of production, however, using only two employees instead of the usual four.
